Discover Sumika

If you find yourself in the heart of Los Altos, California, and you're craving a memorable dining experience, look no further than Sumika. Nestled at 236 Plaza Central, Los Altos, CA 94022, this delightful spot is more than just a place to grab a bite-it’s an experience. Sumika brings an inviting atmosphere that perfectly balances modern dining with comforting, traditional flavors.

Sumika’s menu is a true reflection of the cozy, yet vibrant dining experience the restaurant aims to deliver. With an emphasis on Japanese-inspired cuisine, the restaurant brings together fresh, high-quality ingredients in dishes that are both satisfying and inventive. Whether you're a fan of sushi, ramen, or more creative fusion dishes, Sumika offers a wide array of options for every palate. The restaurant prides itself on using local, sustainable ingredients, ensuring every dish is both flavorful and fresh.

On my recent visit to Sumika, I was immediately impressed by the warm, welcoming vibe as I walked through the door. The interior is sleek yet comfortable, with soft lighting that creates a relaxed atmosphere. What stood out the most was the attention to detail in the service and presentation of the food. It’s clear that the team at Sumika genuinely cares about making each guest feel valued.

One of the highlights of the meal was the miso ramen. The broth was rich and deep, with a perfect balance of salty and savory flavors. The noodles were tender, yet had the right amount of chewiness, and the tender slices of pork added an extra layer of depth to the dish. It’s clear that Sumika’s chefs take their time perfecting each recipe to create a dish that’s nothing short of spectacular.

The sushi at Sumika is another must-try. Unlike many sushi spots, the fish here is impeccably fresh, and the variety of rolls is diverse enough to satisfy even the most discerning sushi enthusiast. I opted for a sushi platter that featured a mix of nigiri and rolls, and each piece was better than the last. The rolls, while inventive, didn’t stray too far from traditional flavors, making them both exciting and familiar at the same time.

For those seeking something a little different, Sumika also offers a variety of unique small plates. One standout was the crispy gyoza, which had just the right amount of crunch and a delicious, savory filling. These little bites paired perfectly with a glass of sake, and they provided the perfect start to the meal.

The drink menu is also worth noting. Sumika offers an excellent selection of wines and sake, carefully curated to complement the flavors of the dishes. If you’re unsure which pairing to choose, the friendly staff is always happy to make recommendations based on your preferences.

As for location, 236 Plaza Central couldn’t be more convenient. It’s nestled in a charming corner of Los Altos, easily accessible to both locals and visitors. Whether you’re out for a casual dinner with friends or celebrating a special occasion, Sumika’s laid-back atmosphere and incredible food make it a fantastic choice for any occasion. There’s also ample parking nearby, making it a hassle-free spot to enjoy a night out.

When it comes to reviews, Sumika is consistently praised for both the quality of its food and the attentiveness of its staff. Many patrons mention the personal touch that the team adds to the dining experience. Whether it’s offering helpful suggestions or simply checking in to make sure everything is perfect, the service here feels truly personalized.

In addition to the fantastic food and service, the restaurant’s commitment to using locally-sourced ingredients is something that really resonates with diners. Sumika goes above and beyond to create a menu that’s both delicious and responsible. It’s a dining destination that feels in tune with both the local community and the broader culinary world, offering something that’s both approachable and exciting.

For anyone looking to explore a restaurant that excels in both flavor and ambiance, Sumika is definitely worth the visit. Whether you’re new to Japanese cuisine or a seasoned aficionado, you’ll find something to love on their diverse menu. It’s a perfect place for a night out, a special celebration, or simply a casual dinner that’ll leave you coming back for more.

  • Delicious yakitori served at this downtown Los Altos restaurant. All the beef, pork, chicken, and scallops skewers were well-seasoned and well-cooked. The veggie skewers were also tasty, and perfect with the beers on tap. Plenty of free parking within a 5-minute walk. Fast and efficient service.

  • I ordered skewers: thigh with negi onion, a classic, pork belly with garlic sauce and shishito peppers. I recently came back from Japan a couple months ago. I went to a chicken specific restaurant called ToriKizoku or Chicken Noble (translated). Best yakitori I've ever had. Having that in my memory, I was blown away that Sumika's Yakitori and other meats were just as delicious as the ones I had in Japan. I just had to take the same order home to my Japanese mother to try. I finished it off with an Agedashi tofu. I've never been a fan of it since I was a kid but it's my mom's favorite so I saw it a lot growing up. Next time I'm here, I am definitely ordering that again. It was melt in your mouth tofu with just enough tempura breading covering it to give a texture element. The dashi broth was sweet and salty cresting an umami explosion in my mouth as I ascended to paradise. (I mightve been a little hungry) Overall. My first time experience was amazing and I will definitely be back. Hopefully next time with my Mom.

  • very good food. Large portions. For 2 people, we ordered 6 dishes. We probably could have ordered 4 and been just enough because I was so full! I like how the food comes out slowly so you can enjoy the food. The vegetable tempura was very generous portions, also the chicken karrage! Loved the eel omelette.

  • It's a cozy restaurant with a nice selection of tapas and skewers. We tried the house special squid fries, veggie tempura, green onion chicken kebab, sori, American beef kebab, and spicy boneless chicken karaage. Everything was fantastic—5/5, except the beef kebab, which we'd rate 3.5/5. If you're not a fan of spice, skip the spicy karaage . The atmosphere is warm, and the staff is friendly .

  • Great restaurant in Los Altos. We came on a Saturday for lunch and it was busy but we were able to get seated right away. We got the salad, a few chicken skewers (all amazing), the rice ball and the set menu with the steak. We had a small issue with the salad which was resolved promptly but otherwise, incredible meal. Staff is also extremely respectful, professional, and friendly.
